Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
I hope everybody is having a solid week thus far. Last week we talked about the beginning of spring and what it means to each of us. Today I want to talk a little about anxiety and creativity.
No matter what stage of career you are at, you will have experienced the intense stress and anxiety that being a journalist or working in media involves. In journalism, where we're already dealing with the daily stress of deadlines, difficult subjects, and the constant pressure to be first and most accurate, anxiety becomes particularly insidious. It whispers that we aren't good enough, our ideas aren't good enough, our colleagues don't think we're good enough.
I've know countless journalists that struggle with this cycle (myself included) — the paralysis that comes from worrying about outcomes that haven't happened yet. We spend more time agonizing over what might happen than actually doing the work that might lead to acceptance. We rewrite the same lede twenty times because we're terrified it's not perfect. We avoid pitching ambitious stories because we've already rehearsed all the ways it could fail. In doing so, we rob ourselves of the joy that comes from the creative process itself, and the growth that happens even when things don't go exactly as planned.
So how do we mitigate this creativity-killing anxiety? The answer isn't to stop caring or to develop some magical ability to never worry again. Instead, it's about building practices that keep anxiety in its proper place, and turn it into a motivator rather than a dictator. It means staying focused on the work itself rather than the potential outcomes. It means remembering that journalism is fundamentally about curiosity and connection, not about perfection or universal acclaim. Most importantly, it means trusting that even when things go wrong — they will — we have the resilience and resourcefulness to handle it.
And with that, let's park all of our worries to the side for a minute, and check out our latest batch of hundreds of opportunities that require your passion and creativity, and nothing else...
