Now to today's newsletter. Last week we talked about special moments, and how important it is to take a moment to appreciate them, both in our personal and professional lives. This week it made me think about complacency, especially the delicate space in our personal and professional lives where we try to balance that with confidence.
When I think back to the start of my careers, I don't remember too many times that I stopped to celebrate my victories, no matter how big or small the achievement was. I'd pause for a moment, but then carry on climbing my mountain as if landing a new job or reaching a milestone was because I was the best and smartest person in the room, and it was just meant to be. That may or may not have been the case — I still haven't fully worked that part out — but now that I've been in this industry for more than a decade, I realize more and more how rare those moments can be.
That's not to say that milestones should not give you a thrill and a boost in confidence, but the danger comes when we start believing our own hype too much. That's when the confidence that once fueled our ambition curdles into complacency. It happens to all of us at some point, when we become too comfortable and start forgetting how we got to where we are.
But here's the paradox: the very humility that keeps us grounded can also paralyze us. Too much doubt, and we become hesitant to pitch ambitious stories, to challenge powerful institutions, to trust our own instincts. The sweet spot lies somewhere between these extremes — confident enough to pursue big ideas and take risks, humble enough to know we might fail and that failure is often our best teacher.
What I've learned from watching journalists navigate this balance over the years is that the ones who sustain long, meaningful careers are those who've learned to celebrate their wins without letting those wins define them. They enjoy the bylines, the awards, the recognition, but they also know that tomorrow's newspaper is blank, that yesterday's triumph doesn't guarantee tomorrow's success. They stay hungry, stay curious, stay humble, not because they're afraid of losing what they've gained, but because they understand that in journalism, as in life, the moment you think you've arrived is precisely the moment you've started to fall behind.
With that, let's get to this week's new batch of journalism opportunities...
