Special moments in our lives + hundreds of journalism opportunities
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Hope everybody has had a great week so far. I certainly have — on the weekend I got engaged. It was everything I had dreamed of and more, and of course up there with one of the most special moments in my life so far.
So this week, I want to talk about special moments. We can't get engaged every week, at least that's what they tell me, but special moments happen more than we might think. The feeling of pride and relief after you hit publish on the story you've been working on for weeks. The moment a colleague or friend confides in you. When a reader or subscribers takes the time out of their day to send you a thank you email.
These moments show up in the middle of ordinary weeks, between the admin, the rejection and amid the chaos that we spoke about last week. Slowing down to notice a good moment can feel indulgent or naive. But those moments are rare. If we don’t take a minute to reflect on them, our days quickly become just a string of tasks that must be done.
Cherishing them doesn’t mean framing them or posting them. Sometimes it means simply pausing long enough to notice them. It’s a kind of respect — for the work, for ourselves, for the fact that good things did happen in the middle of the grind.
So when a special moment comes — a yes, a breakthrough, a piece that finally works — give it a few seconds. Or a few minutes. They don’t come around often.
And on that note, let's get to this week's opportunities...
