Flashlight Grants

Flashlight gives grants to investigative journalists. Journalists retain complete editorial control and are free to publish their work wherever they like. This round, Flashlight is funding Black freelance investigative journalists.  

🆕 Make Your Resume Shine

Join Lynette Clemetson, Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists at the University of Michigan, and Adriana Lacy, founder of Journalism Mentors, as they share their best practices and advice for telling your professional story through your resume, with plenty of time dedicated to attendee questions. Whether you’re looking to get your first job or a seasoned executive wondering how to pivot, you’ll leave this session with ideas to make your resume shine.

🆕 Idea Swap Meetup

Join the ONA an idea swap diving into accessibility best practices. At this event you’ll meet up with product leaders, accessibility advocates and others interested in making news more accessible, and you’ll share ideas in a series of fast-paced breakout discussions. Bring an idea or two to share, and expect to leave with a bunch of new ideas from your peers, plus new professional opportunities, new peers, mentors and colleagues, and inspiration for a collaboration or partnership.

🆕 Health Care Symposium Fellowship

SABEW is seeking applicants for its 2023 Health Care Symposium in Washington, D.C. The fellowship will give journalists a chance to take a deep dive with experts and veteran reporters into several hot-button issues, from the ongoing impact of Covid, to abortion, to changes in reimbursement for prescription drugs.

Local News Incubator

The American Journalism Project, with support from the Google News Initiative, is launching a local news incubator. The program is intended to support entrepreneurs who want to explore launching a new nonprofit local news organization to serve their communities. 

The Scholarship for Journalism Diversity Honoring Julie Schoo

The purpose of the scholarship, named after the former executive director of the National Press Club Journalism Institute, is to recruit promising future journalists who will bring diversity to American journalism. The award can be renewed up to three years, for a total of $20,000 toward educational expenses.

The Richard G. Zimmerman Scholarship

Named After a long-time National Press Club member who died in 2008 and endowed a scholarship in aid of high school seniors who wish to pursue a career in journalism.

The Wes Vernon Broadcast Scholarship

Established in 2021, supports diversity within the field of broadcast journalism while honoring longtime radio journalist Wes Vernon, a former National Press Club member. The scholarship provides $5,000 annually to a student who demonstrates a commitment to a career in broadcast journalism. The award can be renewed up to three years, for a total of $20,000 toward educational expenses.

🆕 Reporting From the Frontlines: A Conversation On the Changing Face of War

From conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan to Russia’s war on Ukraine, what are the realities of working in a conflict zone? How has covering war evolved in recent decades? A panel featuring representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Committee to Protect Journalists, as well as Wall Street Journal national security reporter Vivian Salama, will address the new challenges journalists face and best practices for news gathering. 

Resurrecting Local News

As traditional local news outlets, print as well as broadcast, continue to fold alternative news vehicles are beginning to take their places, bringing new opportunities for young journalists. National media outlets as well as niche publications are working to fill the void.  This webinar will feature a panel of managers and reporters from these new outlets to share how they see their publications evolving and how they are building teams to accomplish their goals.

🆕 New America Awards

The Society of Professional Journalists’ New America Award honors public service journalism that explores and exposes issues of importance to immigrant or ethnic communities in the United States. Although not required, collaboration with ethnic media is taken into account.

🆕 WIJ Scotland Bursary Programme

Women in Journalism Scotland and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation have launched the inaugural WiJS x JRF bursary programme. Five women journalists will each be awarded £1,500 to develop a project shining a light on economic and/or social inequalities around Scotland. The project should be solutions-driven.

GIJC23 Fellowship

The 2023 Global Investigative Journalism Conference is offering 150+ fellowships to established and promising journalists in developing and transitioning countries, and for journalists from disenfranchised communities, to participate in this prestigious event. The fellowship includes: Round-trip airfare to Gothenburg, Sweden; hotel room for four nights; transport between Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport and the conference hotel; reception dinner; breakfast and lunch on conference days; award ceremony dinner; conference registration fee.

IRE’s annual data journalism conference will offer a mix of panels, demos, discussions, networking, and hands-on data training. Full session and speaker details will be released in early 2023.

2023 First Amendment Awards

The Radio Television Digital News Association is the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to broadcast and digital journalism. Founded as a grassroots organization in 1946, RTDNA’s mission is to promote and protect responsible journalism. The RTDNA honors those who practice, promote and defend journalism each year at the First Amendment Awards.

🆕 ProPublica Investigative Editor Training Program

Beginning this summer, ProPublica will invite up to 10 news editors from media companies across the country to participate in a yearlong investigative editing training program, led by the newsroom’s award-winning staff.

🆕 Mini-Bootcamp: Spreadsheets

The place to start for data journalism beginners who want to learn the foundations of using structured data. This online mini-bootcamp will dive deep into the fundamentals of using spreadsheets, including navigation, formulas and functions, sorting, filtering and grouping data, plus other critical skills such as finding, gathering and cleaning data. Using real-world datasets and examples, the IRE training team will help attendees learn the technical steps to work with datasets, along with the analytical skills needed to find and bulletproof data-driven stories.
