Hello folks and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to the world’s largest journalism job board and calendar. Today I’ve switched up the format of the newsletter slightly, and have focused on our growing journalism calendar full of dozens of fellowships, grants, webinars, conferences, workshops and awards programs. Below I’ve included around 25 listings which have deadlines approaching.

In addition to the calendar, I added a humongous 541 new jobs and internships to the board, taking our active total to well over 1,000. And we also have almost 200 new media salaries added to our database this week, taking that total to more than 8,500.

  • Ideal Candidate: The Daily Beast is looking for smart, witty and incisive writers to join our team, which delivers award-winning original reporting every day. Their fiercely independent and irreverent work reaches millions of readers every month. You will be based outside the U.S. to help deliver news to our U.S. audience around the clock. You are an all-rounder who is on top of U.S. politics, global news, media and pop culture. You have a deep understanding of American culture, preferably having lived in the U.S. or with a track record of working for American publications.

The Trace

Data Editor

  • Location: U.S.
  • Ideal Candidate: 5-7 years of experience in management; Newsroom experience and a deep understanding of journalistic standards and ethics; Technical skills including coding or advanced data analysis are nice to have but are not a prerequisite for this role. Curiosity about new technologies, how data can inform reporting and news gathering, however, are a must; A working knowledge of news visualizations and cleaning and analyzing large datasets, particularly in the public health realm; An understanding of methods for acquiring data, from FOIA requests and data scraping to working with academic researchers and local newsrooms; Familiarity leading the design, development, and publication of websites, interactives, and graphics.

Great Lakes Reporter

  • Location: U.S.
  • Ideal Candidate: 6+ years of reporting experience, ideally in the Great Lakes region and/or on the criminal justice beat; Demonstrates exceptional on-the-ground news gathering skills (variety of well-cultivated and maintained sources; generates story ideas; skeptical of what they gather); Works well with colleagues to share information, insights, and ideas; Is committed to public interest journalism and wants to see gun violence coverage of Great Lakes states go beyond standard coverage by delving deeper

Local News Accelerator

IPI’s Local News Accelerator is a four-month programme where you and your organization will build the foundations to develop a financially and editorially sustainable local media business. The programme will offer personalized advisory services, tools and guidance to help you reach audiences and empower your teams to grow into an engaged, responsive media brand during and after the accelerator.

2024 Summer Young Journalists Academy

The Young Journalists’ Academy is a unique programme free for young people. It aims to inspire and train the newsmakers of tomorrow. In partnership with some of the world’s leading media organisations, the YJA gives aspiring journalists the skills and the contacts they need to kick-start their careers in the media.

USC Center for Health Journalism Data Fellowship

This fellowship offers journalists an opportunity to transform their reporting by training them to “interview the data” as if it were a human source. Equipped with the tools to find original sources of information and perform data analysis, Fellows graduate from this hands-on training program prepared to produce in the five months that follow either a major investigative or explanatory health reporting project or a series of individual data-driven health stories that focus on issues important to their communities.

LaunchPad Fellowship for NextGen Journalists

LaunchPad is looking for talented early-career journalists from diverse backgrounds who have a demonstrated commitment to journalism and community storytelling through the lens of racial equity and social justice. Those employed by a news organization, as well as freelance/independent journalists, are encouraged to apply. 

2025 Bertha Challenge

This is an opportunity for activists and investigative journalists to spend a year working on one pressing social justice challenge and to deliver a body of work at the end of the Fellowship year. AI Reporting Grants

The Pulitzer Center seeks applications for its reporting initiative focused on AI and surveillance technologies and their impact on communities around the world. They value accountability and data reporting, collaborations, and cross-discipline approaches. Staff and freelance journalists are eligible.

Nota’s Grant Program: Empowering Small Newsrooms

This initiative is a commitment to the foundational values of journalism. Gwen Ifill Fellowship

This one-year fellowship was created in honor of award-winning PBS NewsHour anchor Gwen Ifill. The Fellow participates in the development and production off Washington Week and PBS News Weekend, with primary responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Producers of Washington Week and PBS News Weekend, including research, gathering editorial information and video elements; copy editing; and assisting with scripts

Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists

Promoting the work and advancing the role of women in the news media across the globe is critical to transparency and a diversity of voices. The Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists provides grantees support to expose under-reported but critical global issues; Undertake ambitious projects that challenge traditional media narratives; Develop field-based expertise and strengthen careers; Pursue training and leadership opportunities; Launch entrepreneurial news projects or acquire the skill to do so.

The Rainforest Reporting Grant provides short-term, project-based funding support to journalists who want to report on tropical rainforests in three key regions: the Amazon, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia. It seeks ambitious reporting proposals looking into critical issues including illegal deforestation, Indigenous rights, the extraction industry, biodiversity, and more.
