Pulitzer Teacher Fellowship

Students today are confronted with a complex media ecosystem and a host of pressing global issues that can be overwhelming to navigate. As part of this paid, virtual program, a cohort of up to 16 educators will explore this challenge over the course of the school year in a community with other passionate Fellows and award-winning journalists.

Black Public Media’s Annual Open Call

Each year, BPM issues an open call for feature-length documentaries and shorts (nonfiction or scripted) that are currently in research and development, pre-production, production or post-production. The focus of the 2023 Open Call is climate stories. They’re looking for traditional media projects that present the voice of the Black community as it relates to our changing environment.

FRED Advanced Data Workshop

Journalists chosen to be a Fellow will have the opportunity to: Visit the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis to learn about economic data; Discover how to graph differing types of FRED data; Learn about new data releases; Explore data and special reports that can help you create new stories; Hear from speakers who will discuss how they take the pulse of the American economy, feed that information to the Federal Open Market Committee and influence interest rate decisions.

Local Media for Democracy

This pilot media funding scheme will inject €1.2m in financial support to local, regional and community media who are struggling to serve the public interest in the so-called “news deserts” areas in Europe. The Local Media for Democracy project is an 18-month project co-funded by the EU and launched by a consortium of partners.

🆕 2023 OCCRP Research & Data Fellowship

OCCRP has announced its first ever Research & Data Fellowship Program. They don’t care if you’re a beginner eager to dive into data journalism, someone looking to enhance your OSINT skills, or an experienced researcher, what matters is that you’re excited about investigative journalism and want to take a step forward.

McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism

This fellowship provides experienced journalists with grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories that delve into critical economic, financial or business issues across a wide array of subjects. You don’t need to be a business reporter to apply; many previous fellows have been generalists, or cover beats such as health care, education or the environment.

2024 Melvin M.S. Goo Writing Fellowship

This fellowship will award financial support to an individual journalist, author, or writer from the U.S. or China for a project that will enhance understanding between the two countries. The project: May be produced in either (or both) English or a Chinese language variety; Must be published or otherwise made publicly accessible in the U.S. and/or China; Must be completed and delivered by the end of 2024.

The Tarbell Fellowship

The Tarbell Fellowship is a one-year programme for early-career journalists interested in covering emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence. Fellows receive a 9-month placement at a major newsroom, participate in a study group covering AI governance & technical fundamentals, and attend a 2 week journalism summit in Oxford. The programme incorporates expert speakers, feedback & mentorship from experienced journalists and networking events with experts from leading AI organisations.

Chauncey Bailey Journalist of Color Investigative Reporting Fellowship

The year-long program is intended to prepare and support a journalist of color for a solid career in investigative reporting. The program also provides an opportunity for the fellow’s news outlets to benefit from the fellow’s investigative skill-building. An underlying goal of the program is to increase the range of backgrounds, experiences and interests within the field of investigative journalism, where diverse perspectives are critically important.

🆕 BWP x Flickr and SmugMug

This is dedicated to advancing the recipient's photography practice, coupled with a two-year Flickr Pro membership and a one-year SmugMug Pro subscription. Additionally, ten deserving recipients will receive a one-year Flickr Pro membership and a one-year SmugMug Pro subscription.

MPIL Journalist in Residence Fellowship

The fellowship enables journalists with several years of experience to spend three months at the Institute. The time and duration of the stay are agreed individually. MPIL Journalists in Residence are free to pursue their own research. They are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to exchange ideas with researchers at the institute and to participate in our various work and discussion formats. The fellowship is geared towards freelance and staff journalists from all media who report and write regularly on legal and constitutional topics, or topics from politics, the economy and research-related topics.

🆕 Bill Lane Center for the American West

The Western Journalism and Media Fellowships provide opportunities for journalists working in all kinds of media — newspapers, magazines, radio, television, online, multimedia, video, film, data visualization and mapping, and books. The fellowship enables journalists to: interact with Stanford researchers, scholars, and students; develop or work on a project of their own design; and spur new coverage and understanding of the American West.

Alicia Patterson Fellowships

The Alicia Patterson fellowships are open only to U.S. citizens who are full-time print journalists, or to non-U.S. citizens who work full-time for U.S. print publications, either in America or abroad. Freelancers are welcome to apply. All applicants, including those being considered for the new Cissy Patterson fellowship for environmental or science topics, should complete the Alicia Patterson Foundation application.

🆕 ACES Scholarships

Six scholarships are awarded annually through the ACES Education Fund to students interested in a career in editing. Applicants for all ACES scholarships must be seeking degrees as enrolled college/university juniors, seniors, or graduate students at the time of the deadline.

Awards include: The Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for Distinguished Reporting of Congress; The Innovative Storytelling Award; The Feddie Reporting Award for outstanding coverage of federal laws or regulations and their effect on local communities; The Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade; The Clifford K. & James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoons; The AARP Award for Excellence in Journalism on Aging.

2024 Pulitzer Book Contest

The Pulitzer Prizes for Books are awarded to work in Fiction, U.S. History, Biography, Memoir or Autobiography, Poetry and General Nonfiction. For the 2024 competition, the criteria for entry in all categories remain the same: Eligible titles must be first published in the United States during calendar year 2023, and made available in hardcover or bound paperback for purchase by the general public. Authors in all categories except U.S. History must be American citizens.

🆕 James T. Grady-James H. Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public

The purpose of this award is to recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding reporting directly to the public which materially increases the public's knowledge and understanding of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields.

2024 Reed Environmental Writing Award

The Reed Environmental Writing Award celebrates writers who achieve both literary excellence and extraordinary insight into the South’s natural treasures and environmental challenges. Nominations for book entries must be works of nonfiction (not self-published), and journalism entries, including newspaper, magazine, and digital writing, must be published by a recognized institution such as a newspaper, university, or nonprofit organization.
