Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism's job board.
Hope everybody has had a great week so far! For the past few weeks, we’ve promoted some of the services of journalism portfolio site Authory. Because of the number of you that have clicked through to their website, we’ll be expanding our partnership with them.
So for the next month, we’ll be dedicating a newsletter each week on a specific service that Authory can provide, from how to automatically host all of your articles in one place, to how to safely back up all of your work to never lose it. So look out for a newsletter later this week and more throughout the next few weeks.
On to this week’s newsletter, and I’ve just got done watching The Gentlemen on Netflix, Guy Ritchie’s TV series adaptation of his 2019 film of the same name. It was a great mix of drama and comedy, and I picked up on one line in the show in particular: You can either fight in the jungle, or exist in the zoo.
In the zoo, everything is safe and predictable. You know exactly when you'll be fed, where you'll sleep, what your routine will be. There's security, but there's also confinement. Your world is limited by the walls around you.
In the jungle, nothing is guaranteed. You have to hunt for your own food, find your own shelter, navigate dangers you can't always see coming. It's unpredictable and often terrifying, but it's also where real growth happens.
It got me thinking about my own situation. Since I quit my “stable” journalism job at the WSJ four years ago, I’ve been chasing my own tail. On one hand I’ve wanted to be brave enough to thrive on my own, but have longed for the security of a monthly paycheck. And on the other, I’ve not wanted to succumb to just being another number, but have been too scared of failing on my own.
For too long, the zoo has been too large. Too many publications requiring the same old story templates, the same sources, the same voice. We’ve existed too comfortably, and that is now changing.
Journalism increasingly belongs to those who are willing to fight in the jungle. To those who are willing to adapt, to innovate, to take risks, to figure things out as they go.
This newsletter is here to help you find opportunities — but what you do with them, how you approach them, whether you choose the zoo or the jungle, that's up to you.
Just remember: the most interesting stories are rarely found in the zoo.
