Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism’s job board.
I hope everybody’s had a good week so far! Last week we talked about when the opposite of vindication occurs, when we are wrong and what we can learn when we’re forced to face our wrong decision in the face. This week I want to talk about something that I’m confident most of us have been on both sides of: our society that expects us to share everything.
Whether it’s our process, our struggles, our mental health journeys, the discourse is all too often about how to build your personal brand, and why it’s so crucial for people to see the “real you” behind your byline.
But here’s what nobody says out loud: you don’t actually owe anyone your inner life. You can be an excellent journalist and still keep your process private. You can produce meaningful work without live-tweeting your breakdowns. The assumption that good journalism requires public vulnerability is relatively new, and it’s worth asking who it actually serves.
There’s a difference between the transparency that makes your work accountable and the performance of transparency that social media demands. Showing your sources and methods strengthens journalism. Sharing your every doubt and insecurity—that’s just content creation dressed up as authenticity. And the uncomfortable reality is that the people demanding you share more are rarely the ones bearing the cost when that sharing backfires.
The best journalists I know have clear boundaries between their work and their personal lives. They don’t tweet through their reporting process. They don’t turn every professional challenge into a thread. They do the work, file the story, and then go home to lives that aren’t fodder for engagement metrics. That’s not being closed off — it’s living our life.
This week’s jobs include positions at organizations with different cultures around sharing and transparency. Some will expect you to be a “brand.” Others just want you to do the work. Neither is inherently better, but it’s worth knowing which you’re signing up for. You get to decide how much of yourself you share. That’s not selfishness. That’s self-preservation.
