Don’t panic, just manage: Producing your best when your back is against the wall
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism’s job board.
I hope everybody has had a great week so far. In today’s newsletter, I want to talk about performing at our best when our backs are up against the wall. We’ve all been there — the breaking story that lands 20 minutes before deadline, the source who goes silent just when you need them most, the editor who wants “just one more revision” when you’re already running on fumes. Journalism has never been kind to those who need things to go according to plan.
But what I’ve learned is that some of our best work happens when it feels like everything is falling apart. Not because chaos is good — it’s not — but because pressure has a way of stripping away everything that doesn’t matter. When your back’s against the wall, you stop overthinking. You trust your instincts. You make the call and move forward.
The difference between drowning and swimming isn’t how calm the water is. It’s whether you remember that you know how to swim. Every seasoned journalist has their own catalog of near-disasters that somehow became the stories they’re proudest of. The interview that almost didn’t happen. The data that finally clicked at 11pm. The rewrite that actually made it better, even though you were certain it would break everything.
What separates the journalists who burn out from those who keep going isn’t some superhuman ability to stay calm under pressure. It’s recognizing that the wall at your back isn’t a dead end, it’s actually the thing that stops you from retreating. When there’s nowhere to go but forward, you’d be surprised what you can produce.
This week’s jobs include positions where you’ll face exactly these moments. The question isn’t whether the pressure will come, but whether you’ll remember, in that moment, that you’ve always known how to swim.
