You can do anything, but you can't do everything
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism's job board.
Hope everybody is having a good week so far. Last week I formally introduced a partner of ours, Authory, whose founder, Eric Hauch, created a video just for us on how to create a journalism portfolio in 1 minute. Later this week, we’ll have the second segment of our series, in which Eric will tell us how we can automatically backup our portfolios so they never get lost in the ether.
For today, I want to talk about what happens after we build some momentum, and suddenly we're faced with a different kind of challenge: the temptation to do everything at once.
The journalism world is full of these moments. That fellowship application that closes tomorrow. The freelance pitch that could lead to bigger things. The networking event that might open doors. The training that could advance your career. The side project that could become your main income.
As powerful as momentum can be, it does eventually wear off and, if you’re like me, you finish the day with a bunch of half-done tasks, and a feeling of emptiness and failure. To this day, there are still times where I’m so eager to complete as much as I can in a single day, I race through tasks without giving them the attention they actually need.
So here’s the thing: momentum isn’t about doing everything — it’s about doing the right things, with enough care that they actually stick. Sometimes that means slowing down. Sometimes it means saying no. And sometimes it means letting one opportunity pass so you can give your best to another.
You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.
To make the rest of your week a little easier, we have hundreds of new opportunities. Check out tasters of some of them below, and become a paid subscriber to gain full access to more than 1,000 of them.
