Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism’s job board.

Hope everybody has had a good week thus far! Last week, we talked about ruts, and how I have escaped mine in the past. This week, I want to talk about when things are going well, about when getting out of a rut doesn’t even cross our minds.

Complacency is such a tempting shadow — it starts the moment the emails quieten, the deadlines lift, and the good news keeps rolling. It whispers that you’ve earned a slower hand on the wheel, that momentum is self-sustaining. But in an industry where stories disappear as fast as they surface, we know better: everything can change without warning, so every calm patch deserves as much focus as the storms we already survived.

What keeps me honest is remembering how fragile the good stretches really are. When my inbox fills with thanks instead of complaints, it’s easy to forget the long nights when nothing felt possible. We guard against complacency not because we fear success, but because we respect the work that got us here. The grind isn’t the enemy; it’s the proof that we still care.

I try to build small reminders into the routines. A quick note about the story that almost didn’t happen. A pause to think of somebody who pulled me through a lean patch. Gratitude becomes a practice, not a reaction, and that keeps the spark alive when the news cycle feels suspiciously gentle. The trick is to treat the calm as a responsibility, not a vacation from caring.

So even when the metrics look good and the calendar feels manageable, we stay curious, stay generous, stay ready. The world doesn’t owe us a warning before it tilts, but it does reward those who keep their feet planted and their eyes open. Let’s take another lap while the road is smooth — because we know from experience that resilience is built long before the next curve appears.

With that, let’s get to this week’s opportunities…

P.S. If you or your organization is hiring now or in the future, please fill out this form or email me at daniel@insidethenewsroom.com and we’ll help you promote your listing.
