The Ryder Cup blueprint: Why teamwork trumps individual stardom in journalism
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism’s job board.
I hope everybody has a good week so far. If you are like me, you will have spent all of last weekend enthralled in the drama of the Ryder Cup, golf’s biennial tournament between the U.S. and Europe. After a gripping three days, full of heroic shots and vulgar abuse from certain members of the New York crowd, Europe overcame it all to win for the just the fifth time away from home. Since 1995, Europe is now 11-4 over their old foes and, looking back over that stretch of time, there are plenty of lessons the European team can teach us, while the U.S. showed us how talent alone can only get you so far.
Before we get to that, I’d like to quickly shout out last Friday’s newsletter, which featured our second edition on how to use Authory, the journalism portfolio site. Check out how to automatically back up all of your professional work in just a few simple clicks.
Right, back to the Ryder Cup. Europe showed us that the collective is stronger than the individual, and what can happen when individual egos take a backseat. In journalism, all too often we lionize the star reporter, the big name, the one with all the bylines. But the best work happens when writers collaborate with editors who push them, when reporters team up across beats and desks, to create something neither could do alone. Your career isn’t about being the best in the room, it’s about finding the room where your strengths matter most.
Cultures cannot be built overnight. They are built from having a philosophy that is passed down from generation to generation, and Europe’s repeated success is the result of decades of building on something larger than anyone in the room, and then passing it onto the next generation of players. In journalism, I’ve experienced this first-hand during my time at The Guardian, and the whole newsroom knew no one person was bigger than the more than 100 years of journalism that had taken place before us. Unbreakable cultures and true legacies are built in newsrooms where people support each other, when freelancers collaborate instead of compete, when we understand that our collective success matters more than our individual glory.
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail: Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, showed us that success is in the small details. If you improve your chances of success by just 1% in several areas, they all build up to put you over the line. From developing an advanced data model on each player, to making sure the bed sheets were comfortable for his players and their families, there wasn’t a detail too small, nor a limit on where we can improve our chances of success. In journalism, this means doing the homework that others skip and leaving nothing to chance. It means finding those small edges that compound over time: writing a little better, pitching a little smarter, building relationships a little stronger.
And lastly, mental resilience: The vile abuse the European team received from certain members of the U.S. crowd was unimaginable. But the Euros took it and used it as fuel to overcome the adversity to succeed. Now they come out of that weekend as immortal. Every journalist faces hostile environments — the interview subject who doesn’t want to talk, the publication that keeps rejecting your pitches, the industry that tells you you’re too young, too old, too specialized, too generalist. The ones who succeed aren’t the ones who avoid these environments — they’re the ones who prepare for them, who build mental toughness, who maintain focus when everything around them is chaos. They use the adversity as fuel, not as an excuse to quit.
This newsletter is here to help you build that culture for yourself. The jobs, opportunities, and tools we share aren’t random — they’re filtered through this lens. As you scroll through this week’s listings, ask yourself: am I building a career based on individual stardom, or am I building something more powerful — a culture of excellence that compounds over time? Europe showed us the answer. Now it’s our turn to apply it.
