In journalism, we're constantly looking for the how-to, a step-by-step guide, or the proven method to success. The problem with that is that there simply is no how-to nor any prescriptions. Instead, only life experiences can teach us what we need to apply to the rest of our own unique journeys.
Every time I used to ask journalists how they got to where they are, I received a completely different answer. Every story is different. Every career path is unique. Every opportunity requires its own approach. What works for one person might not work for another. What succeeds in one context might fail in another.
We're taught to follow templates, to stick to formulas, to do things the way they've always been done. But the most interesting journalism — the most impactful stories — often come from breaking those rules.
