Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism’s job board.

We’ve talked in the past about building momentum when you restart — about the methodical, intentional process of moving forward after you’ve protected your peace so well that you’re ready to step back into the race. But what happens when we’re not ready to step back into our routine and rhythm? What happens when we fall into a rut and can’t get out of it?

Getting stuck in a rut feels like walking through mud. Every step requires twice the effort. Every task feels heavier than it should. You’re doing the work, showing up, meeting deadlines, but nothing really matters. Nothing feels like it’s moving forward. You’re putting in the hours, but you’re not getting anywhere. The pitches go out and come back rejected. The stories get written but they don’t land. The sources don’t respond. The energy just isn’t there, and no amount of trying harder seems to fix it.

Then one day — or maybe without you even realizing it — you’re out. You’re back to being your motivated self. The mud clears, and suddenly you’re moving forward again. The pitches start landing. The sources call back. The work feels meaningful again. And you can’t quite pinpoint what changed or when it happened. It just did.

After years and years of working harder and trying harder to bust out of my own ruts, I’ve realized something: the best way for me to do so is to actually do nothing and let go of everything. Not giving up — that’s different. But letting go of the desperate need to fix it, to force it, to control it, to make it happen. Letting go of the belief that more effort will break you free. Sometimes the rut needs you to stop fighting it. Sometimes the mud needs you to stop struggling, because the struggling itself is what keeps you stuck.

This isn’t about quitting. It’s about recognizing that some things can’t be forced, and that trying harder isn’t always the answer. Sometimes the answer is to let go, to trust that the rut will end when it’s ready to end, and to stop measuring your worth by how quickly you can escape it. The work will still be there. The opportunities will still exist. And sometimes, the best thing you can do is nothing at all — until suddenly, you’re out, and you’re moving forward again, and you can’t quite explain how you got there.
