Complacency after the spiral

Stress floods you. Complacency underserves you. Both keep you from the honest next move.

Complacency after the spiral

Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.

Before we get started: we recently launched the Journalism Toolbox on the opportunities board — you'll find it on its own tab. And if you've lost a journalism job this year to layoffs or related cuts, we still offer one month of complimentary access to all premium resources. More info here.

Last week we talked about stress as information — anxiety as a signal, not a verdict. This week I want to talk about what often arrives next: complacency after the spiral — the soft drift that shows up once the panic eases and “fine” starts to feel like enough.

I don't mean rest. Rest is earned and necessary. I mean the week where the chest is quieter, the inbox is manageable, and somehow you stop reaching. No urgent crisis or dramatic collapse, just a gentle lowering of your own bar because surviving the last stretch felt like the accomplishment.

I've repeated that loop too many times to remember. After a stretch of anxious overdrive — refreshing job boards, rewriting newsletters, treating every silence like a crisis — relief arrives and I mistake it for arrival. The habit is small: I skip the hard application because I already “did the work” of worrying. Keep doing it and the week fills with motion that doesn't cost you anything: tidy admin, easy replies, nothing that could reject you.

It usually looks like responsibility from the outside. You're still busy. You're still “in it.” You're just not asking the day for anything that might sting. And every time I confuse calm with completion, the same question surfaces: am I recovering — or just hiding inside a softer version of stuck?

What those repeated loops have taught me is that stress and complacency are twin traps. One floods you; the other underserves you. Stress says everything is urgent. Complacency says nothing is worth the risk. Both keep you from the truth. The work after the spiral isn't to stay on high alert. It's to keep a little voluntary friction in the week so peace doesn't turn into drift.

So maybe the practice this week is one uncomfortable move: one application you'd rather postpone, one pitch that isn't safe, one follow-up you've been calling “not urgent.” Not a return to panic. Just enough stretch to prove the calm is rest — not retreat. With that, here's to the week after the spiral — in life, and in the work.
