Even stress and anxiety are information
It isn't good for you — but it still points at something real. Take the signal, leave the catastrophe.
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Hope everybody has had good weeks so far. Last week we launched two things worth a second look: The Journalism Toolbox and complimentary access if you've lost your job in journalism. Do check those both out.
This week I want to talk about something we usually treat as pure enemy: stress and anxiety aren't good for you — but they are still teachers if you can listen without letting them run the newsroom of your mind.
I don't mean romanticizing the spiral. Anxiety that won't let you sleep, stress that makes your chest tight before you open the inbox. Left alone, it shrinks your world. It makes ordinary days feel like emergencies, and can convince you that the next rejection, the next silence, the next slow week is a verdict on your whole career.
I've lived that enough to recognize the pattern. A pitch goes unanswered and my body decides the market has moved on. A week of thin replies and I start rewriting my own competence. The habit is small: one anxious thought before I make my coffee. Keep feeding it and it becomes the day's editor — deciding what you dare to send, what you avoid, what you call "realistic" when you mostly mean scared.
What experience has taught me is that stress is information, not instruction. Anxiety often points at something real: you care about the outcome, you're under-resourced, the industry is unstable, this application actually matters to you. Those are lessons worth keeping. What isn't worth keeping is the conclusion stress loves to draw — that you're behind, finished, or only as good as the last reply. The work is to extract the signal (this matters; prepare properly; rest before you break) without obeying the catastrophizing that arrives with it.
Journalism makes this harder because the job trains your nervous system for alert. Deadlines, breaking news, public criticism, precarious contracts — the profession can make chronic tension feel like professionalism. Freelancers feel it in the quiet between invoices. Staff feel it in the restructure rumor that never quite dies. Students feel it every time someone asks what their "backup plan" is. You're not weak for feeling it. You're working inside a system that profits from your vigilance. The craft still needs you clear enough to report accurately — including about your own life.
So maybe the practice this week is one small translation: when the stress spikes, name the lesson underneath it in a single sentence — I'm tired, this application matters, I need one clear next step — and then do that one thing, not the whole imagined disaster. With that, here's to learning without letting the panic become the curriculum — in life, and in the work.

📋 Why it matters for journalists: Useful when you need scroll-stopping social cards, newsletter headers, event promos, or short motion loops on deadline without waiting on a designer. Playful enough to explore fast; precise enough to lock a look and export clean.
📋 Fast start: Pick a stencil and add your headline, Dial in color and motion, Switch canvas size for feed/stories/print, Export still, GIF, or MP4
That's all for today. Thank you as ever for reading and supporting. See you again next week 👋
