Fail To Prepare, Prepare To Fail

Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.

This week I want to use applying to jobs and internships to talk about preparation.

During my first summer of graduate school at the University of Missouri, I learned the hard way. I told myself I had time, that the real scramble started later, that I'd get serious once the semester settled. But by the time I opened the internship boards in earnest, the good seats were already gone. Many of my classmates had multiple offers, most newsrooms had filled their summer cohorts, and I was left with nothing that resembled the summer I'd pictured when I enrolled.

It wasn't that I lacked ambition, I lacked urgency. My attitude was "I'll start applications soon once the rest of my coursework has died down". Every time I replay that empty summer, the same question surfaces: was I unlucky — or was I simply late? To be fair to my 23-year-old self, I was still getting used to writing essays again and I didn't anticipate the semester passing by so fast. But newsrooms don't offer sympathy, and they certainly don't wait.

Either way, I learned my lesson the hard way, and vowed to myself there and then that I would never miss out on another opportunity because of a lack of preparation. The following summer I would go on to earn a summer internship with Bloomberg News, followed by internships with FiveThirtyEight (RIP) and The Texas Tribune.

What this whole thing taught me is that being left behind rarely feels dramatic in the moment. It just feels like one more week of waiting until your materials are perfect. Journalism runs on windows — internship seasons, fellowship cycles, staff postings that close when the slate is full, not when you're emotionally ready. Freelancers feel it when a pitch call expires while the draft is still "almost there." Staff writers feel it when an internal role fills before they ask for the conversation. And students feel it exactly how I did: midterms first, applications later, summer gone.

So the rest of this week is simple. Pick one opportunity with a real deadline in the next two weeks and finish the application materials before you open anything else on the board. Not five tabs, just one complete file. With that, here's to showing up before the party ends — in life, and in the work.
