✍️ 350 New Journalism Jobs + Weekly Freelance Pitches, Fellowships and Events Listings — July 15, 2026
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Hope everybody has had a great week so far. Last week we talked about trust. This week we're going to talk about a skill we rarely mention out loud: saying no, and how not every yes is harmless.
I used to think refusal was for people with options and seniority. Everyone else, especially early in a career, was supposed to be grateful, flexible, available. There is certainly truth in showing up, but I’ve learned the harder version: yes without discernment isn’t virtue. It’s how you end up over-committed, underpaid, and strangely less respected, because people learn you’ll do what they don’t want to.
I know the feeling. It’s the rewrite that wasn’t in the brief, accepted because pushing back felt like disappearing. Or the pitch you take at a rate you already know is too low, because you’re afraid silence will follow a decline. The fear isn’t laziness. It’s survival math, the quiet calculation that if you say no, someone else will say yes, and you might not get called again.
What I've learnt over time is that no isn’t rudeness when it’s clear. It’s information. It protects the work that actually deserves your best. The most professional people I know aren’t yes-machines, they’re reliable because they’re selective.
Journalism trains the opposite instinct. News doesn’t wait, and freelancers especially know what an empty month looks like, so availability starts to feel like the best ability. The industry rewards the person who picks up, flies out, files again. Some of that is the job, but not all of it. A lot of exploitation survives on the polite fear that refusal will cost you your place in the room. Sometimes it might. More often, the cost of endless yes is slower: thin work, burnout, the gradual erosion of the reporter you meant to be.
So this week, think of what you can say no to, inside or out of journalism. One clean no — a bad rate, a timeline that insults the reporting, a meeting that could be an email. Not performatively. Not with a speech. Just accurately: I can’t do that well right now. With that, here’s to protecting the work by protecting the person doing it.
