Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Last week we talked about keeping adversity in perspective. This week I want to talk about one of the strangest truths I keep relearning: the only thing we can control is not having control.
I don’t mean surrender as defeat. I mean the kind of letting go that allows you to not have to wrestle the universe every time it refuses to follow your script. Plans change. People change. Bodies change. Jobs end. Stories die. Love shifts. The fantasy of total control is exhausting, and it’s often what makes suffering worse.
I used to read “letting go” as giving up. Now I read it as clarity: seeing what’s mine to influence and what isn’t. That’s not passivity. It’s energy management. It’s choosing where your life actually lives. It's liberation.
Journalism tests this daily. You can’t control where a story lands, what an editor cuts, how readers respond, or whether the newsroom cooperates with your deadline. What you can control is smaller and more important: how many calls you make for that one nugget that moves the story forward; your ethics; your boundaries; whether you confuse process with results, or outcomes with identity. The best journalists I know aren’t calm because life is calm. They’re calm because they’ve stopped demanding guarantees from work that rarely offers them.
So this week, let's loosen the grip. Not on standards, but on certainty. To do what you can, then let the rest be what it is.
