Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.

This week I want to talk about a discipline that sounds boring until it saves you: do today's job, and stop letting the uncertainty of five years from now steal the excitement that's actually in front of you.

I spent years trying to solve my whole life at once. Where will I be living? Will this newsletter work? Will journalism still exist in the shape I recognize? Will I regret the path I chose? Those questions aren't stupid or wrong, they're human. But when they become the main event, they have a way of paralyzing the only part you can actually influence — what you do today.

It usually starts with one skipped thing, a set of emails you were meant to send, or a first draft of a story that's due. I used to constantly defer the daily tasks and instead used the future to become a fantasy in order to avoid the present. And every time I traded today's task for tomorrow's anxiety, the same question surfaced: am I building a career, or just rehearsing one?

What all of this has taught me is that today's job is almost always smaller than the panic makes it sound. Not "figure out your life." Not "become the person you'll need to be in 2031." Just the next honest action: the pitch, the call, the edit, the application, the hour of learning something you can actually use this month. Stack enough of those and the future stops being a threat you have to solve in advance. It becomes something you arrive at by walking.

Society makes this harder because we're sold futures constantly: the right age to buy a house, the career that should look like a staircase, the life that photographs well from the outside. Social media doesn't help, but the people who build lives they're proud of aren't usually the ones who cracked the five-year plan on a whiteboard. They're the ones who kept doing the unglamorous daily work when the map was missing — showing up, following through, saving a little, getting better in inches nobody applauded.

So this week, let's name just one thing that's today's job — not your whole career — and do it before you open the tab about where you'll be in five years. With that, here's to the work that's actually in front of you — in life, and in the inbox.
