AI doesn’t have to be scary — learn it with intention
This week’s Journalism Calendar is packed with AI courses, workshops, conferences, and grants. One calm slot beats a week of doomscrolling.
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Hope everybody has had a solid week so far. This week’s calendar is crammed with fellowships, trainings, and events (170 in total!), and a large number of them are about the subject of the moment: artificial intelligence. Between now and the end of the year we already have more than 200 AI-related listings live: courses, conferences, training workshops, reporting grants and more. That is not a coincidence. It is the industry admitting, in public scheduling language, that “I’ll figure it out later” is no longer a plan.
I often feel the same friction many of you reading this might also feel. It feels like yesterday that AI was a shiny new toy that drafted a lede I’d never publish. But now it's the smartest search product rewriting how your story gets found, and suddenly I have to learn the ins and outs of AEO and GEO (I didn't even properly grasp SEO!). Seemingly overnight, if we're not using the latest tool to speed up our process or create new and unthinkable things, we're way behind. The impact is small but potent: I open another thread, skim another prediction, close the tab feeling informed and somehow further behind. Do this enough times and the anxiety compounds without a single skill improving. And every time I confuse reading about AI with learning it, the same question surfaces: am I preparing for the job or just collecting dread?
Instead of frantically trying to learn everything about AI overnight, treat it as structured continuing education, not a personality upgrade. Attend one workshop or learn one new tool a week, and soon you’ll have a real ability to work with it as a better journalist, not just a longer reading list and the same dread. That's why we've made an enhanced effort to fill our Journalism Calendar with more AI-related listings. One concrete slot to learn each week in a calm and intentional structure.
Journalism has always had a quiet curriculum outside the newsroom: fellowships, mid-career courses, the conference you half-resent until a panel changes how you report. AI didn’t invent that. It just made the cost of skipping it more obvious. The people who will still be useful in two years are rarely the ones who shouted loudest about the tech. They’re the ones who treated learning the way they treat a deadline, on the calendar, with a start time, finished enough to use on the next assignment.
