Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Hope everybody has had a solid week so far! Before we get to this week's newsletter, I wanted to briefly shout out the folks at Votebeat, who have put together an extensive resource for the upcoming U.S. elections. This week we have refreshed our evergreen Freelance Pitch Call Board — new pitch calls, same idea: opportunities that don’t expire while you’re still finding your footing. I wanted to use that as an excuse to talk about the period of time that the board is especially useful for: the first 90 days without a desk.
Whether you have left a newsroom recently, or a newsroom left you, the shock to the system is like no other. I remember when I left The Wall Street Journal. The first month was pure relief that the nightmare was over, but the cognitive distortion quickly caught up with me and I spent the next few months with severe anxiety. For the first time in my life, I had no safety net of full-time education or employment, and the only person that was responsible for my success or failure was myself.
What my first 90 days taught me was the importance of creating an infrastructure for myself. Not branding. Not a personal manifesto. A boring system: a shortlist of outlets that fit my skills, a weekly pitch habit that I kept as the backbone to my activity, and a rate floor I wouldn't fall below. It was important to recognize that while the persuasive urge to fire out a billion emails every day was all powerful, I knew that a strong and rigorous system would keep me going for the long haul.
So where do you start when you're starting a new freelance career from scratch? Well, that's part of the reason why I built the freelance opportunity board, to make sure the first 90-day runway wasn't so bumpy.
