Karsh Fellowship Q&A + This Week’s Best Journalism Jobs

Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.

This week we have the pleasure of welcoming Rob Eshman, Director of the Karsh Journalism Fellowship, the world’s only nonpartisan fellowship dedicated to reporting on Jewish issues in the U.S. and worldwide. Fellows receive a $4,000 stipend, with travel and lodging covered, for three intensive retreats in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C. Applications for 2027 are open to early- and mid-career journalists of all backgrounds and platforms. Deadline: Apply by October 15, 2026.

Daniel: Who is the ideal Karsh Fellow? Beyond a strong clip file, what experience and qualities are you looking for in early- and mid-career journalists?

Rob Eshman: Open-minded, curious and committed to covering some of the most contentious subjects in the media fairly and accurately. That describes any good journalist, of course. What sets a strong applicant apart is that they already cover, or want to cover, the kinds of stories this fellowship focuses on.

Daniel: The fellowship is open to journalists of all backgrounds, not only those who are Jewish. What should a strong applicant understand about the program — and why might someone without a personal connection to Jewish life still be an excellent fit?

Rob: Journalists who aren’t Jewish assign and report the vast majority of stories that involve Jewish issues. Stories about, say, a campus protest over Gaza, an antisemitic attack, or even a holiday feature could land on any journalist’s desk, anywhere. We want every journalist on this beat, by choice or by assignment, to have the grounding and sources to do it well.

Daniel: Covering Jewish issues often asks journalists to go deep without losing their footing. How do you think about immersion vs independence in this work — getting close enough to report with authority, while staying independent enough to report with integrity?

Rob: Our instructors and mentors work through this directly with the fellows. It’s a skill the fellowship actually sharpens. Going into a story with real background makes you more likely to ask the tough questions and seek out the full range of viewpoints.

Daniel: The program is grounded in accuracy, independence, transparency, and accountability. In a topic area that can be emotionally charged and closely scrutinized, what does accuracy under pressure look like in practice?

Rob: To give one example: Janine Zacharia, who covered the Middle East for the Washington Post, and Jodi Rudoren, former Jerusalem bureau chief for The New York Times, walked fellows through their own reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where the margin for error is thin and the scrutiny is immediate. Fellows then did hands-on exercises:  shaping leads, analyzing headlines and spotting misinformation in breaking, contested events.

Daniel: Fellows take part in intensive retreats in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C., meeting journalists, scholars, policymakers, and cultural figures. How do you ensure a diversity of viewpoints?

Rob: The fellowship is nonpartisan. I’m an opinion columnist — obviously I have strong views. Our funders, instructors and mentors often have opposing views. What we agree on is the value of journalism education that takes in the full range of views in the Jewish world. Our curriculum, speakers and mentors come from across the ideological spectrum by design.

Daniel: For a journalist considering applying by the October 15 deadline: what would you want them to know about what they’ll walk away with — in their reporting, their network, and their confidence covering these issues?

Rob: A network of top sources in Jewish communal life, politics and entertainment, spanning the ideological spectrum. An eye for the range of rich stories in the American Jewish experience. And the ability to write with greater sensitivity, context and depth about some of the most loaded, controversial topics in the news.
