The Best Work Arrives When You Stop Pushing

Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.

This week I've been listening to Rick Rubin's The Creative Act: The Way of Being, not as a how-to for producers, but as a reminder of something I keep forgetting in the scramble of inboxes and deadlines: the best work often arrives when you stop forcing it, and make room for what's trying to come through.

That sounds all too conceptual until you notice how much of a life and career gets spent in the opposite posture. We manufacture the angle before we've listened, and decide what the story is before the reporting is done. I know I still wake up each day trying to conquer the universe, instead of letting it come to me. Even curiosity gets treated like a productivity tool. The habit is small. Keep doing it and it becomes the only mode you know — efficient, closed, certain before you've earned certainty. And every time I force the work instead of leaving room to be surprised, the same question surfaces: am I making something — or managing my anxiety about not knowing yet?

What I've learned is that receptivity isn't passivity. You still show up. You still do the research, the calls, the rewrite. But you leave a little space — for the line you didn't expect, the idea that arrives on a walk when you weren't "working." Rubin talks about the artist as a kind of antenna. I don't need the mysticism fully spelled out to feel the truth in it: some of the best work I've done started as an odd detail I almost ignored, because I was too busy performing certainty.

Journalism trains the opposite instinct. Speed rewards the person who decides first. Freelancing rewards the pitch that already sounds finished. None of that is wrong — deadlines are real — but if you never leave room for not knowing, for the sense that the world is larger than your outline, the craft becomes extraction. The reporters I learn most from still protect a quieter mode: they listen longer than is comfortable, and they let a story change their mind.

So maybe the practice this week is one deliberate opening — a walk without a podcast, or ten minutes with a source's words before you decide what they mean. Not as performance. As appreciation for whatever wants to arrive. With that, here's to doing the work — and to leaving the door cracked for what you didn't plan.
