✍️ 350 New Journalism Jobs + Weekly Freelance Pitches, Fellowships and Events Listings — July 22, 2026
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Last week we talked about saying no. This week I want to talk about something we don’t always give language to: grief for the career you thought you’d have, and how you can mourn a path without abandoning the one you’re on.
It's something I think about a lot, probably too much. My career in journalism didn't turn out the way I had planned coming out of journalism school. I completed a string of internships, quickly found a job at The Guardian, and then landed a job with The Wall Street Journal. A lot of success came very quickly, and in a flash it was all over as I decided to run this newsletter full time. While I would have made the same decision 10 times out of 10, I still can't help but think about what could have been.
That’s the part people don’t always understand. This isn’t regret about the choices we make, but grief for a version of the future that was real for a while, then suddenly wasn’t. I can be proud of Inside The Newsroom and still feel the pull of the life I was building before I stepped off it: the newsroom rhythm, the byline at a place that still feels like a credential in certain rooms, the career that looked, from the outside, like it was only going up.
It catches me in ordinary moments. A former colleague gets a new job or promotion, or someone asks what it was like at the Journal and I answer easily, then feel oddly quiet afterward — not because I want to go back, but because a whole parallel story ended mid-chapter. And every time I treat that feeling like a secret I’m not allowed to have, the same question surfaces: what am I protecting by pretending I never wanted the other life at all?
What all of this has taught me is that grief isn’t disloyalty to your current work. It’s honesty. You can love what you’re building and still mourn what you left, especially when you chose to leave. Naming that doesn’t weaken the present. It stops you from performing a version of yourself that never had to let anything go.
I don’t think my story is universal, but the feeling might be. Plenty of folks might never get the Guardian-and-Journal run. Plenty lose a newsroom without choosing to. Plenty are trying to stitch a career together from freelance, contracts, and pivots they never imagined. That ties into our piece on reality not being romantic. Mourning a path that closed isn’t weakness. It’s what happens when you finally admit the map you were given doesn’t match the terrain you’re on.
So this week try to name one closed door without trying to fix it in the same breath — what you thought would happen, what actually happened, and what you’re still building that the old story didn’t make room for. With that, here’s to grieving honestly, and to making a life in journalism that doesn’t require pretending you never wanted anything else.
