August doesn’t need a sprint — it needs a floor

Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.

Last week we talked about how the summer is for building in quiet. This week I want to talk about something for when motivation won't show up, how to keep the baseline — the minimum that keeps you in the game when inspiration is on holiday.

I don't mean grinding through heatstroke or pretending you're fired up when you're not. I mean the small, repeatable floor you refuse to drop below: one hour of real work, one outreach, one thing that says I'm still here even when the bigger goals and ambition feel out of reach.

I've mentioned before about how I've had Augusts where I wanted to do nothing but wait for September. The newsletter felt too heavy to lift, and even my natural curiosity felt like a chore. In those stretches, the mistake I used to make was swinging between two extremes — full sprint or full surrender — instead of asking what the bare minimum viable week actually looked like.

I still think in this all-or-nothing thinking. I skip Monday because I'm tired, then write off the whole week because I "lost momentum." By Sunday I feel guilty as hell and feel even further behind, which makes Monday even harder. And every time I abandon the baseline because I'm not feeling heroic, the same question surfaces: am I resting, or just quitting in installments?

What all of this has taught me is that baselines beat bursts in the dog days. Not because bursts are bad — sometimes you need them — but because August rarely rewards the person who only works when they feel like it. The baseline is boring on purpose. It's the pitch you send even when you don't fully believe in it yet. The hour at the desk even when the room is hot and your brain is slow.

Journalism romanticizes intensity — the late file, the all-nighter, the reporter who never switches off. Summer exposes the lie in that story. You can't white-knuckle your way through twelve months. Freelancers know this in the body: feast months don't erase the quiet ones, but a baseline keeps the quiet ones from becoming a reset to zero. The people who last aren't always the most motivated in August. They're the ones who kept a floor.

So maybe the practice this week is to name your baseline — one hour, one email, one task — and protect it like a deadline you'd give an editor. With that, here's to showing up small — in life, and in the work.

And with that, let's get to this week's opportunities and teasers...
