Summer Is for Building in Quiet

Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.

I hope everybody has had a good week and good summer so far! This week I want to talk about an opportunity hidden inside the "August slump": summer is for building in quiet. When nobody's watching and the pressure to perform dips just enough to do the unglamorous work that actually compounds.

Anyway, we're sold the idea that careers move in visible leaps. Quiet months get treated like wasted months, but some of the most durable progress I've made happened when nothing looked impressive from the outside: starting a new project or learning a new tool. I know the temptation to spend August waiting for September to rescue me. I still feel it every time August comes around, the hope that when everyone comes back online, something will click into place without you having to build it in the heat. Sometimes something does arrive. More often, September rewards whoever kept planting in August.

Over the years, I've learned that backstage work counts. Not every month needs a byline or an applause. The dog days are strangely good for depth — fewer distractions, less performance, more room to get something right instead of just getting something out.

Journalism doesn't reward this openly. The industry tracks what's published, not what's prepared. But the people I learn most from use slow seasons deliberately — they read into their beat, fix their systems, sharpen a skill the newsroom will need in September. Freelancers who thrive long-term usually have an August story that isn't glamorous.

So maybe the practice this week is one piece of quiet building — something you'll thank yourself for doing in September, even if nobody is there to acknowledge it now. With that, here's to the work that doesn't trend — in life, and in the craft.
