Finding the Groove Again
300+ new jobs and opportunities to get you back in the groove
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, home to more journalism opportunities than any other newsletter in the world.
Welcome back to the groove as September has arrived once again. If you're returning, physically or mentally, back to the office or classroom, you'll know that this month has a unique sound, and it's not always tranquil. It's often the sound of notifications stacking up again, inboxes refilling, the low hum of everyone telling themselves they're raring to get back into the thick of it. This week I want to talk about what happens when the calendar says back to school or back to work, but your body is still somewhere in August.
๐จAre You Hiring?
Before we get to that, a quick reminder that if you or your organization is currently hiring or looking to spread the word about any opportunities, then we have open promotion slots in our newsletter for September and beyond. If you'd like to find out more information, please fill out this quick form and we'll get right back to you.

The program is nonpartisan, grounded in accuracy, independence, and accountability. Deadline: Apply by October 15, 2026. Find out more here.
It's not about waiting until you feel "on" before you begin, but sometimes it's about accepting that, after a summer lull, you probably won't slide back into focus like a drawer closing shut. The first week back can feel overwhelming and directionless, but that's not failure, that's just re-entry.
I still feel it each year even though I no longer work in a newsroom. I try to burst through the doors with September energy, but my attention span is still at the beach somewhere. I make ambitious lists, then wonder why the work that used to flow now feels like pushing a cart uphill. The moment is usually small: one morning when I sit down intending to finish everything and finish almost nothing useful. Then, without noticing, I start measuring myself against the version of me who existed before the lull โ as if summer were an annoying glitch instead of a rest period.
What years of this repetitive cycle has taught me is that the groove is rebuilt, not remembered. You don't think your way back into rhythm. You repeat your way there โ the same hour, the same desk, the same first task before the inbox owns the morning. One decent day matters more than a perfect plan. The lull didn't erase your skills. It just made the ramp back a little longer than LinkedIn makes it look.
So maybe the practice this week is one re-entry rep: one hour of real work before email, one application, one pitch, one thing that says I'm back in the room without requiring you to be fully sharp yet. With that, here's to the ramp โ in life, and in the work.
